The roots of public education in Cherry Hill extend back to the mid-1700s, when a log cabin school house was built in the present location of Ellisburg. In the post-World War II years, the former Delaware Township—renamed Cherry Hill in 1961—evolved from an agricultural region to a bustling suburban community. As the population grew, our Cherry Hill Public Schools grew as well. Today, the district has 12 elementary schools: Clara Barton, J.F. Cooper, Bret Harte, James Johnson, Joyce Kilmer, Kingston, A. Russell Knight, Horace Mann, Thomas Paine, Joseph Sharp, Richard Stockton, and Woodcrest; three middle schools: Henry Beck, John A. Carusi, and Rosa International ; and two high schools: Cherry Hill High School East and Cherry Hill High School West. The district also has an Alternative High School Program, housed at the Malberg Building, which serves about 40 students in Grades 9-12, and the Barclay Early Childhood Center, a comprehensive preschool that services both typically developing and special needs children, ranging in ages from three to five years old.
