WE are the Professional Educators Union (PEU), a national trade union that’s proudly South African. What drives us is to organise teachers – the educators of the nation, regardless of colour, creed and gender – and represent them in labour-related grievances and during collective bargaining to ease the pressure that comes with the nature of the teaching profession.

We aim to make teachers’ lives easier so that they continue empowering the youth with the most important tool – education – without stress or worry. Our journey began in 1904 at a gathering of African teachers outside Polokwane (then Pietersburg) where Northern Transvaal Native Teachers Association was formed and launched in 1906.

Many associations and name changes took place between then and 1997 but that’s a long story. And in 1998 – 94 years later – PEU was officially launched to much fanfare. The slogan we adopted was “Ora et Labora”, a Latin/Christian mysticism which means “pray and work” and we have never looked back.

We are a member of the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) and the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council (PSCBC). We are also affiliated to the National Council of Trade Unions (Nactu) and the Confederation of South African Workers’ Unions (Consawu).

At the same time, we represent our ever-grateful members in the National Economic Development and Council’s (Nedlac) Development Chamber. Moreover, we are part of the National Board for Further Education and Training (NBFET). Ours is a proud history and it’s growing stronger and stronger every day. We invite you to be a part of it.
